taking its name from a species of spider, ‘katipo’ is a compact outdoor stove designed by student elad achi during his studies in industrial design at the holon technological institute in israel. developed during research exercises into the use of metal, the hand-sized object folds into just 50 mm in width and 120 mm in length, providing an easily-transported piece of kit, perfect for any outdoor adventure.

the katipo (night stinger) is one of many species of the genus latrodectus, such as the australian redback spider which is common in new zealand and got its name from the native maori tribes. inspired by the spider’s small size, the stove was designed by achi to resemble the eight-legged insect. additionally, the functional object was also inspired by the katipo’s color and proportions.

each leg has a cutting edge that stops its motion by a stopper pin and opens to a range of 180 mm diameter and an angle of 120°, thus producing an equal opening on each side. the product is made of stainless steel and painted black in ceramic-based color heat resistant.
