design studio kauppi & kauppi has taken cues from a sailing trip to the danish island læsø for hygge, a collection of generously proportioned ottomans that resembles an abstract indoor archipelago. the seating islands offer space to be shared by one, two, or more individuals, and come in three sizes and with three add-on accessories – all connected to the extended solid wooden legs. created for swedish wooden furniture producer karl andersson & söner, the collection was recently launched at stockholm furniture & light fair 2020.

for its first collaboration with karl andersson & söner, kauppi & kauppi has created a new collection of generously proportioned seating islands that capture the great woodwork, craftsmanship and tradition found at the swedish furniture producer. hygge‘s character and area of use changes depending on chosen accessory, while repeated in numbers and varied in sizes, the islands can create dynamic groups resembling an indoor, on-land, archipelago. the round shape proposes the ottomans to be placed in the center of interiors, while their purpose can serve a short break, a rest, a conversation or a coffee when waiting for the mobile phone to be recharged.

‘the hygge family of furniture is developed to leave a lot of options open for the interior designers to play,’ says johan kauppi. ‘its flexibility in use, functionality and expression will easy lend itself to interiors in a broad range of styles. fully dressed in black it will signal a minimalistic and strong attitude, while a blond soft material and surface choice, will emphasize and flirt more with the scandi-soft tradition.’kauppi & kauppi designs hygge collection of wooden ottomans with add-on accessories

the three optional hygge accessories are designed to reach out a hand to the small or big needs people may have, sharing a public seating space. the diagonally armrest creates a sympathetic support for every individual who appreciates a sturdy grip when rising. the collection also includes a small round personal table and a long table. crossing the large ottoman, the rectangular table divides the seating area into two sections, while offering an inviting spot for placing a cup and a cinnamon roll, magazines for reading while waiting in a lounge or vases with seasonal fresh cut flowers. kauppi & kauppi designs hygge collection of wooden ottomans with add-on accessories

every piece of furniture made by the producer karl andersson & söner in huskvarna, sweden, is made with the aim to last for generations and decades. ‘it is a delight to collaborate with a producer where every project and piece of furniture starts with a raw plank in their own production,’ notes nina kauppi. ‘an ambitious approach to both craftsmanship and company culture – exemplified in their use of solar energy and their own production of veneer. values we aimed to reflect when designing hygge.’

the hygge collection is produced using high-tech CNC, combined with the cabinetmakers and local upholsterers skilled hands. the cold-cured foam cushion is designed with a convex bombé shape, creating a surface with a generous softness, highlighting the character and texture of the chosen fabric or leather.

‘our hopes are that the hygge collection contributes with a whispering design-expression rather than a shout,’ kauppi & kauppi explains. ‘as designers we believe it to be a necessary and a most sympathetic challenge, to design furniture that will last esthetically over time. ideally hygge will maintain its relevance in the future, hopefully surviving generations of use.’
