‘capsula’ is a project by kei harada of DO.DO. that involved the renovation of an italian restaurant. based off of the company’s name, the architect has redesigned the storefront and interior in relation to the capsule which seals wine bottles. ‘just how a bottle of wine changes over years and years of maturation, my aim was to keep the ‘good-old’ taste while achieving a new look.’ the façade now appears as if it has been wrapped with a label that begins to tear down the center of one of its five doors, above which a series of letters highlights the name of the establishment. below the seam, which occurs half way above the extents of the shaded patio, each component has been painted navy blue with the exception of a rectangle of red that distinguishes the main entry from its counterparts.

upon stepping into the restaurant, diners are given a view of the elongated space lined by tables and chairs. to the left, a recessed wall is brightened by architectural lighting placed along its top edge. on the opposing side, a wooden counter faces the bar and kitchen area divided by brick pony walls and white timber columns. these materials are accompanied by contemporary lamps and graphical elements that serve as wayfinding devices towards programs such as the bathroom and the backyard.

  • So many things to look at… I want to open a retail space just to copy the facade paint job. Very cool.
