following a successful collaboration in 2019, architect kengo kuma and sportswear company ASICS have teamed up to develop a second iteration of the ‘METARIDE AMU’ running shoe. while the design is again inspired by traditional japanese bamboo crafting techniques, the sand beige color of the sneaker has been chosen to reflect the tones of the sahara desert — a site of great personal importance for kuma since he visited as a student.

building on the METARIDE, ASICS’ most technologically advanced running shoe, kuma combines a performance ‘monosock’ with overlays that are strategically placed to hold the foot in place. a toggle lacing system secures the foot, while the strips form the ASICS logo on the side of the shoe. recycled polyester is used for the knit material that covers the feet, while the upper has a shoelace stopper that allows wearers to adjust the tightness of the shoelaces with a single touch.

as with the previous model, the sole is split into two parts: a tan midsole made of an ecologically-conscious wood-derived textile; and a clean white outsole. a shock-absorbing material gel placed on the heel complements a two-part ortholite and cork insole to enhance cushioning when landing. priced at ¥39,600 (approximately $374 USD), the sneaker will be exclusively available online in japan from march 12, 2021.
