kengo kuma ASICS collaboration references japanese bamboo weaving

kengo kuma has collaborated with sportswear brand asics to offer a new take on its metaride AMU silhouette. the sneaker, which echos the architects signature style, features an upper constructed of a white performance knit layered with interwoven synthetic strips. it’s crisscrossing pattern was inspired by a traditional japanese bamboo crafting technique known as ‘yatara knitting’.

kuma‘s first-ever footwear collaboration presents an environmentally-friendly metaride design. building on asics most technologically advanced running shoe, kuma combines a performance monosock with overlays that are strategically placed to hold the foot steady. a toggle lacing system secures everything in place and the strips cleverly form an asics graphic on the midfoot.

the sole is split into two parts. a tan midsole that is made of an ecologically-conscious wood-derived textile, and a clean white outsole. a shock-absorbing material gel placed on the heel compliments a two-part ortholite and cork insole to enhance cushioning when landing.
