in china, ‘jiaoyi’, an ancient folding chair is synonymous to power. the one who is first to sit in the jiaoyi is of the highest authority. quite differently in western cultures, a rocking chair offers you the freedom to relax, a place of rest. ‘dynastic rocker’ by kirs chang chien of gunn hu design is a hybrid design bringing together the chinese jiaoyi and the western rocking chair. it is a combination of two chairs of vast contrasts. the austerity of a jiaoyi is diluted with a sense of relaxation. the rocker is light, resting between the moving and the static. the clear lines and metallic touch give ‘dynasty rocker’ a sense of modernity, transforming an ancient chinese object with a new image.
