knack's ābl transforms a walking cane into a modern accessory

product design studio knack defies the stigma of an outdated walking cane and introduces ābl. designed to elevate both the user’s physical and emotional experience, ābl transforms itself from a mobility aid to a personal accessory.

knack proposed a new walking cane design, intended to serve as a trusty companion, providing stability and confidence. constructed from plastic and aluminum, combined with clanky adjustment features, canes were often cold and impersonal. designers at knack looked to re-imagine today’s walking cane to produce a design object that someone would be proud to use.

the designers focused on improving the user’s personal experience with an otherwise classic object. knack aimed to improve its functionality and give it more thoughtful aesthetics. they created an authentic cane with a timeless form that complements the user.

ābl has been designed with the end user’s needs and aesthetics in mind. its flared rubber grip tip provides extra traction while walking and also gives users the freedom to stand the cane beside them without looking for a surface to lean it against. wrapped in cushioned leather, the cane’s ring-shaped handle ergonomically positions the user’s grip directly over the cane’s shaft, increasing both comfort and stability. ābl’s genuine materials of stitched leather, solid wood, and natural rubber wrap this classic design in an aesthetic that intends to flatter the user.
