munich-based designer konstantin grcic likes to define function in human terms, combining formal strictness with mental acuity and humor. ‘primo’, his latest collection for italian manufacturer mattiazzi, is the perfect example, where he has epitomized the archetypical chair. comprised of only four legs, set and backrest—the most basic elements—grcic has created a strong architectural presence through the strictly vertical orientation of the legs.

to break the formal strictness of the primo collection for mattiazzi, konstantin grcic has curved the backrest, resulting in what seems like a levitation on the ends of the chair’s hind legs. ‘when multiplied, the chair conveys an unassuming rationality – making it ideal for a wide variety of uses in the home and contract markets (dining, working, auditorium seating, waiting, and the like),’ says grcic.
