selecting a perfume is ultimately an olfactory experience. however, visual cues, such as those provided by the scent’s packaging can also have a significant impact. regardless of optical hints, the fragrance itself can sometimes be hard to discern; yes, there’s hints of this and of that, but what are they? kyugum hwang’s ‘scent palette’ pairs emotional intuition with a system that uses color, shape, and layering to enhance the selection process.

‘scent palette’

often, a perfume is composed of three ‘notes’ that when blended together, create its own unique smell. ‘scent palette’ uses a tiered rack to separate each note — top, middle, base — allowing users to clearly distinguish the relation between what they’re seeing, and what they’re smelling. selectors choose one bottle, all of which are uniquely colored, from each level of the display, and push them together. both physically and visibly combined, the customized scent is ready to be worn.
