kyunchul kim combines old construction wood with mycelium to create stool furniture

designer kyunchul kim has created a stool using wood that has been used in traditional korean hanoks, combining it with mycelium. the purpose of the project is to allow the materials, which once played an important structural and functional role, to meet other materials that were born with vitality and thus, to be used again and generate new forms.

although the trees used in hanok construction are strong and beautiful, they have been removed for a series of reasons and are treated as waste materials. on the other hand, mycelium is the vegetative part of a fungus or fungus-like bacterial colony, and can be used for furniture construction, if cultivated with fiber so that it has enough strength to grow with moisture and nutrients. here, kyunchul kim has applied the mycelium in the empty space of the wooden parts, where it grows and makes the whole formation stronger, while showcasing new textures, and playing a functional role in the furniture structure. each piece of wood that has been dismantled is connected through bio-materials with life and is reborn.
