ligne roset sintra settee is a classical yet contemporary masterpiece

incomparable in appeal and comfort, noé duchaufour lawrence designs his first settee for ligne roset. named ‘sintra’, the sofa’s styling displays a strong personality, where its unique sense of elegance can be admired from all angles. the piece exercises and exhibits the french furniture brand’s expertise and was first shown at IMM cologne 2018, before debuting at maison & objet spring 2018 afterwards.

we met with noé duchaufour lawrence for a facebook live session at maison et objet in paris where he gave us a inside look into the design of the sofa, and other projects he worked for at the fair. please excuse our trembling hand.

the idea for ‘sintra’ was to create a sofa which truly reveals the skills of ligne roset with upholstery details, proportion and comfort, as well as a sofa that plays on the classical environment in terms of shape,’ explains noé duchaufour lawrence to designboom.

using natural forms that are supple, fluid and structured, the ligne roset ‘sintra’ follows the design language of noé duchaufour lawrence. the solidity and warmth of its classic base, made from either natural or anthracite-stained oak, is refined by its sculptural and three-dimensional treatment. this styling continues to the main body, where the vastly wide sofa – 248cm in fact – is further amplified by its double hammer-head shaped cut. this provides a light but very comfortable space for users to relax upon.

also, the detail is more modern with the arms and its connection to the backrest. this section is created with a bit of tension in the way it curves upwards. with this kind of detail,’ continues the designer, ‘we arrive to a more modern environment, even though the ‘sintra’ can fit a very classical atmosphere as well with different fabrics, velvet and leather.

the elongated and hammer-head shape of the lower body blends with the receded and curvaceous armrests. these lines continue to wrap across the backrest to fully envelope the users. upon the back, its upwards flowing form is enhanced by a detailed line that is available in a range of different types of finishing: simple stitching, twin needle stitch and bourrelet or baguette stitching. the incomparable comfortable ‘sintra’ is completed with back cushions filled with the softness of goose feathers.
