chinese artist and designer ling fan recently completed a spatial installation ‘design into life’. the piece captures the three stages of the relationship between life and design.

the first is ‘ignoring’ – viewing design as a high art form which is inaccessible and far from real life. second is ‘magazine’ considering design to be like a consumable visual image rather than a real life experience. the third represents design as something which is very much a part of everyday life.

ling fan’s installation represents these three relationships of products and their environment. first, design products are hung from the roof, second, design objects are hung on the wall, third, design products create a café in which to serve visitors. the products in all three instances resemble one another, a display of how objects can be works of art, but should also be integrated for use in everyday life.
