matthew weatherly has sent us one of his recent experiments. ‘loop’ is a sculptural form created using compressed maple. weatherly has been experimenting with the material to explore its properties for future furniture making projects. the special wood is able to bend at extreme angles as this piece illustrates. weatherly explains, ‘during the compression process, the steamed lumber is reduced to about 80% of its original longitudinal length, breaking it down on a cellular level.  as long as the wood retains its approximate 25% humidity range, it can be cold formed, and then dried to a desired shape.’ looking forward to the furniture possibilities.
