luca cipelletti erases weight, structure and volume in XYZ collection

architect, museologist and designer luca cipelletti — founder of AR.CH.IT studio — presents XYZ, an exhibition centered around the designer’s close study of themes like subtraction of matter, perspective and the spectator’s point of view. used mainly in architecture, these principles have been applied and re-articulated by cipelletti into a collection of furnishings, tables and desks that draw attention to the focal point of each piece resulting in a juncture at which the spatial coordinates XYZ converge to apparently erase weight, structure and volume.

starting from the close study of design details, XYZ by luca cipelletti is a minimalist, almost japanese collection, that creates a new structural tie that is both internal and invisible, allowing large surfaces — over 3 meters long — to be supported. the pieces appear as if they were designed in two dimensions, where the solid materiality of the surfaces are thin as blades while the supporting legs appear to change according to each possible variant point of observation.

to accompany the different tables types and desks that make up the collection, luca cipelletti has selected and curated a series of lamps by leading italian designers active in the period spanning from the 1940s to the 1960s, including gino sarfatti and franco albini. thus, the exhibition creates a dialogue between the pure geometry and technical research of the modern era, and the rigorous and experimental language of the designer.

this show at rome’s galleria giustini / stagetti marks the beginning of a larger collaboration that will continue on the occasion of the 2019 salone del mobile, where the meeting point between art, design and architecture will be explored— another central theme of cipelletti’s work.
