‘furniture factory’ is a collection by dutch designer lucas maassen and his three sons. maassen employed his sons julian and maris, both age 7, and thijme, age 9, to paint the pine wood furniture built in the factory. as noted in a contract the boys signed with their father, each son receives a stipend of 1 euro for every piece of hand-built furniture they paint and may only work three hours per week, as allowed by dutch child labor laws. due to the condensed time frame in which the brothers and father are able to create, the speed of production is a highly influential factor in the aesthetics of each LM+S piece.
