the playful design signature of maarten baas

in ‘aligned’, baas has re-imagined the outdoor furniture typology by sketching the slats with a pencil and paper, and then meticulously recreating them in real life. the result is a playful design that emanates a clear maarten baas signature. ‘the starting point was similar to every object I create: making a fully functional design piece that looks like it has been sketched by hand,’ the dutch designer shares. 

baas creates objects that are rebellious, playful, intellectual, theatrical, and artistic. he translates the human touch into mechanically produced design objects. ‘in a quick sketch, beauty is often found,’ he says. ‘but those spontaneous lines are often lost in an industrial process.’ and so, baas adds organic forms and wobbly lines to an otherwise very straight-lined design world.
