in our fast-paced and consumer-oriented culture, once things are broken we discard them and get new ones. contrary to this, and dating many centuries back, kintsugi — translated to golden joinery — is a traditional japanese art technique that uses lacquer mixed with gold powder to repair golden ceramics. why? to enable the beauty of imperfection while honoring the history of an object. with this in mind, italian designer marcantonio has launched at maison et objet his ‘kintsugi’ collection for seletti.

in kintsugi for seletti, marcantonio plays with the aggravation of repair, transforming it into an aesthetic charm. the broken pieces of porcelain are glued together with veins in precious brilliant 24-carat gold, resulting in new tableware pieces made from different colors and shapes with a particular uniqueness. the kintsugi collection is elegant and contemporary in a dandy way, reminiscent of classicism with its limits and style shattered, culminating in something new and disruptive, in typical seletti style.
