german illustrator maria emmrich has designed ‘manufaktur eins’, a space-saving magazine system beehive for the young generation of beekeepers in the city. the project combines the natural needs of the insects and the ergonomic requirements of the beekeepers to create an ecological apiculture. the beehive is not only usable in gardens, but also on the roof terrace, in the workplace or at the domestic balcony space.

the materiality is crucial when generating this type of apiculture, that’s why maria emmrich chose cork-polymer composite, bringing excellent insulation performances and an enormous weather resistance and light weight with it. the idea behind placing a plant in the cover is to create another layer of insulation. the individual components can be serviced thanks to the modular structure. a positive side effect is the use of rainwater, so that no water logging occurs. a window in the front is recessed in order to observe the bees.
