‘doveline’ designed by mark & philosophy

designers’ own words: after collecting a great amount of market research on drawing tools and their users, we (mark & philosophy) found that drafting tools are often error-prone and have a short in lifespan. we believe the solution to these problems can be found in tools based around an ideal of tradition, ease of use, and craft. our product, the ‘doveline’, combines several problematic tools into a single high quality instrument. we conducted a series of tests with various circle-making devices on the market. all of the tests resulted in strained hands, awkward motions, and inconsistent circles. we asked ourselves, ‘how could we improve the experience of this simple task?‘. through various sketches and iterations, we determined our product’s form, identity, and packaging. we wanted to create a product with materials that would be matched by its thoroughness in design – something useful enough, simple enough, and precise enough that it would travel with the user throughout his/her career. to achieve this we devised a system based around a straight-edge and a dovetail track, which easily holds interchangeable attachments. the ‘doveline’ set includes four tool attachments: center-point, scribe tip, lead holder, and blade. designers: zach jenkinsjonah willcox-healey and wesley chau
