‘wide open’ marks the first collaboration in which theo eyewear collaborates with an international designer: matali crasset. the french creative has realized 12 different pairs of glasses for the belgian brand – eight optical versions and four sunglasses – each named after a ‘trat de caractère’ (characteristic): ‘audacieux’ (bold), ‘averti’ (knowledgeable), ‘confiant’ (confident), ‘curieux’ (curious), ‘délicat’ (delicate), ‘expressif’ (expressive), ‘impliqué’ (involved), ‘impulsif’ (impulsive), ‘rebelle’ (rebellious), ‘rêveur’ (dreamy), ‘sensible’ (sensitive), and ‘spontané’ (spontaneous).

theo owner patrick hoet worked closely with crasset to translate her vision and technically perfect her designs. material wise, ‘wide open’ is comprised of six glasses made from acetate, and six which have acetate temples combined with a metal front. in terms of form, each of the plastic versions have a counterpart in metal, while ‘audacieux’, ‘averti’, ‘confiant’ and ‘impulsif’ have flex temples for greater wearing comfort; with all ‘wide open’ glasses equipped with lenses from essilor. additionally, the inside of the shaded glass has been treated with a multi-layer anti-reflective coating which prevents a distracting glare.

matali crasset on the ‘wide open’ collection for theo eyewear:

a collection to keep your eyes open in order to decipher the complexity of this world. glasses to confirm one’s personality in a globalizing world. a support to form your own identity. twelve directions like twelve ways of seeing, to register the world. it’s twofold: the face maintains cordial relations with the frame which enhances the glance and reinforces the characteristic at the eyebrows. pronounced eyebrows to show our appetite in life. frames chosen for their material – acetate or metal – or brightly coloured, to emphasize the wearer’s identity. frames to show one’s willingness not only to participate in the world surrounding us, but also to discover this world.’

collectively ‘wide open’ is a symbiosis between a love of contemporary design and a passion for color, resulting in a unique and animated series of eyewear.
