villa noailles (constructed between 1924-1932) is a historic site in france which is a fine example of robert mallet-stevens’ architecture. spanning an area of 1800m2, in 2003 it became an art centre and has since presented a variety of temporary exhibitions in the fields of fashion, photography, design and architecture. each year the institution hosts two festivals, one of them being ‘design parade‘ which was inaugurated in 2006.

 

as part of its program, villa noailles organizes an annual global competition–a platform offering emerging creatives exposure to members of the industry, along with journalists and the public–in which a jury selects ten shortlisted projects to be displayed as one of the main highlights of the design parade program. the eighth edition saw a panel of experts: bertjan pot, pierre doze, rolf hay, max lamb, laurent le bon, leon ransmeier, julie richoz, giulio ridolfo; select works by sylvain aebischer (switzerland); dimitri bähler (switzerland); daniele bortotto (italy); sarha duquesne (belgium); béatrice durandard (france); laureline galliot (france); stephanie hornig (france); claire lavabre (france); mathieu peyroulet ghilini (france); and mugi yamamoto, switzerland, whose works are on show until september 29th.

the design parade 8 jury members have awarded mathieu peyroulet ghilini the grand prize for his project ‘trétreaux’. the french creative’s trestle system is a result of his studies into modular objects, in which he has developed a series of connections for a set of standard elements to be assembled–a combination of rods (wood or steel). the work evolved as ghilini collaborated closely with alistair law, a former employee of arup, studying various structures–testing archetypal forms of arches and bridges–in order to adapt them to the scale of furniture he desired, thus forging links between design and architecture. offering an assembly of components which can be mixed and matched with one another, ghilini’s four trestles are all aesthetically like ‘floating rods’, challenging the relationship between industrial production and hand processing, such that a perforated sheet metal trestle’s rods may be manufactured by machine, but require welding together by hand.
