‘across borders’ is a platform encompasing exhibitions, conferences and an online pop-up store. it is based on a participatory and co-creative process among designers and typographers from different parts of the world. to make this challenge a reality, mayúscula invited prestigious designers to send a black graphic piece with the theme ‘design that breaks borders’. each final poster shows two different overlayed works that create a new piece, in which the message of one designer dialogues with the other.
as examples, mayúscula has a wrapper of singaporean bubble gum with an armenian insult; the boundary line between turkey and syria or a tribute to aldrin, a man in space and his mission to explore unknown territories. this multilingual platform seeks to raise questions on the individual versus the collective, local versus global, coexistence among people, dialogue between different styles, alphabets and countries of origin, and the immense problem of immigration, relocation and subsequent adaptation of displaced societies.
‘across borders’ first exhibition was inaugurated on june 7 as part of the barcelona design week 2017. all the benefits go to refugees kids through save the children, a non-profit organization.
