‘mi casa, your casa’ is a playful urban installation for the time of social distancing

first created back in 2014 by esrawe studio + cadena, the ‘mi casa, your casa’ installation takes on new meaning in 2020. in the time of social distancing, the series of red frames offers a perfect solution to reignite communities and bring people safely back to public spaces.

‘mi casa, your casa’ was first installed in atlanta to establish a new relationship between the high museum and the neighborhood, not only transforming the public space but building a bond between the community surrounding it. after atlanta, the installation was placed in several museums, streets and public parks in different cities and countries. it also served as a temporary refuge for some families that lost their homes during the earthquake of 2017 in mexico.

as people slowly return to a new normality after widespread lockdown, esrawe studio + cadena propose that the installation could provide the ideal means to reignite connections with family and friends, as well as with the community as a whole. the project was developed with the need to socialize at its core, and with its playful design it aims to show the value of human interaction. shaping integrated communities is a major task that needs to be tackled with imagination, an open mind, and most importantly, a co-creative and playful spirit.

the design team chose the most basic shape recognizable by all audiences, one that will relate to the idea of warmth, comfort, safety and welcoming. thanks to its shape, the installation also has the possibility to be reconfigured in multiple scenarios and be able to host multiple activities but considering the recommended distance.
