michele de lucchi presents 'many hands make one' carpet houses

for its fourth edition, 1 + 1 + 1 has invited michele de lucchi and AMDL circle, loris cecchini and pentagram & friends to take over the ground floor of milan’s assab one. the project, which takes a step further in deepening the links between architecture, art and design, doesn’t see three monographic exhibitions in parallel but rather as a single exhibition where the pieces relate to each other under the banner of interaction and collaboration.

the events that have unfolded throughout 2020 and their global reach have created an unprecedented historical panorama. this paradoxical condition has brought with it the now-familiar social distancing phenomenon whose effects are still to be evaluated. the exceptional moment we are currently living has highlighted the importance of the individual, the collective and the interaction and collaboration between each other.

michele de lucchi: many hands make one

it is not by chance that michele de lucchi and AMDL circle’s installation starts from a primordial and familiar element — a carpet — and transforms it into a collective architecture manifesto. hence the title many hands make one; hands weave knots, which become carpets, which then become houses, which turn into a village and so on. the installation, a variation of an architectural research project investigating the relationship between people, craftsmanship and architecture, emphasizes that the design and realization of the carpet is the expression of collective history.

in dialogue with michele de lucchi many hands make one, loris cecchini’s modular structures meet the poetic language of naresh ramchandani from london’s studio pentagram (pentagram & friends) displayed in video form. overall, the show merges different languages and knowledge and creates a unique connection between the three interventions.
