renowned american designer, milton glaser, has passed away on june 26th, 2020, aged 91. born in the bronx of new york city in 1929, glaser went on to establish a prolific career and attain wide recognition in the field of graphic design, most notably for his instantly-recognizable ‘I ♥ NY’ logo, the iconic bob dylan poster design, and co-founding new york magazine in 1968. in may 2000, designboom was fortunate to meet glaser in his new york studio, and you can enjoy the video interview in full here.

after studying at the cooper union in new york city and the academy of fine arts in bologna, italy, glaser established push pin studios in 1954 alongside three classmates from cooper union: reynold ruffins, seymour chwast, edward sorel. together, the team of illustrators and designers would go on to leave an indelible mark on graphic design. then, after 20 years, glaser founded his own firm: milton glaser inc

it was in the mid-1970s that the designer would create his most enduring piece: the ‘I ♥ NY’ logo. recognized and replicated the world over, the simple yet timeless logo was glaser’s own love letter to the big apple — the city in which he was born and raised.
