this proposed water sculpture for the slovenian capital of ljubljana aims to encourage public interaction within the city center. conceived by mojca kocbek vimos and primož boršič, the design was created in response to a competition held by the chamber of architects of slovenia, which invited architects, sculptors and painters to create a better and more engaging public space. the winning design responds to the brief by challenging new perceptions towards the specified area.

the sculpture is located at the junction between two streets. the proposal focused on re-channeling the movement between these adjoining roads, encouraging people to engage with their surroundings. the team says the piece ‘creates new interactions of the two spaces, it frames views, channels passenger flow, connects’ through the use of this centerpiece.

the tubular appearance mirrors the water which flows elegantly from its sprout. its curved form creates a spatial loop which turns inwards on itself, forming an enclosed seating area to be enjoyed. the designers state that the ‘sculpture’s unique appearance does not try to compete with its surroundings, but tries to add a contemporary layer to the existing complexity of this space. therefore the sculpture becomes a strong reference point, a piece of urban jewellery, which is perceived as a city landmark.’ in effect, the proposal acts as both an artistic statement as well as a functional entity that unifies the two neighboring streets through the use of public art.
