upon entering CASACOR during miami art week 2019, designboom was greeted with a pastel-hued room by moniomi that screamed play with me now. from a marble and onyx ping pong table to a memphis-inspired punching bag, each object featured on the space was where it needed to be, expelling a sense of it has all been thought through. as we continued exploring, new textures, colors and materials were revealed with each stare, while a common string linked them all: ancient greece and the sport of fashion.

designed by ronald alvarez and monica santayana of moniomi, and titled altis ornamentum, this curated collection of custom furniture and accessories incorporates a variety of sports components with luxe materials. in CASACOR, the space reinterpreted an altis — the sanctuaries where athletes retreated to in ancient times and the sacred grove of zeus and the first olympians. a closer look revealed that not only were we surrounded by sports equipment, but that the floor plan resembled a court embraced in an arched colonnade design taken from historical areas like the coliseum.

hanging from the ceiling were an array of white basketballs accompanied by the lux mini hoop — a wall-mounted basketball hoop that combines marble, onyx, copper and hand-woven cotton threads. available with a square or arched backboard, the sophisticated hoops could be used to actually play a game. the show-stopper was without a doubt a marble and onyx dinning table that doubles as a ping pong table. with a striped black and white border, the table had a leather white net that added to its sumptuousness.

overall, moniomi incorporates a variety of sports components with luxe materials and a demure palette, resulting in the softening of a traditionally masculine space with a touch of femininity.
