Motofocker Velocar combines human and electric power

The Motofocker Velocar, developed by designer Máté Fock, is a three-wheeled human-electric hybrid vehicle positioned between a bicycle and a car. The project explores how lightweight construction and accessible materials can create an alternative mode of transport with features that combine the advantages of both vehicle types.

Structurally, the Velocar is built from water and cooking-resistant birch plywood for the chassis, with canvas used for the body and seat. Additional parts are sourced from standard bicycle components or adapted from semi-finished industrial products. This choice of materials emphasizes recyclability, repairability, and accessibility, allowing the vehicle to be fabricated with basic hand tools, even in a DIY workshop environment. The hybrid design addresses specific functional needs. Compared to a bicycle, it offers a more comfortable seating position, weather protection, improved stability, and greater luggage capacity, with reduced wind resistance. Compared to a car, it requires no driving license, operates as a bicycle up to 25 km/h with a 250W pedelec system, and remains lightweight and low-cost.

Materials are chosen for recyclability and repairability

The Velocar is intended for a wide range of users, including rural and suburban commuters, hikers, parcel delivery drivers, and people with balance or mobility challenges. Its modular construction supports repair and adaptability, while its compact design emphasizes efficiency and reduced environmental impact. Production is planned to begin with kits that include all custom-made components, such as wood, canvas, and steel, while leaving the choice of standard bicycle parts to users. This approach provides flexibility and accessibility, with kits offering the core custom-made parts while leaving the choice of standard bicycle components to the user. Fully assembled vehicles will also be available, equipped with a 250W pedelec system and a 630Wh battery.

By using low-cost materials and straightforward production methods, Máté Fock’s Motofocker Velocar offers an alternative in a market where many comparable vehicles are priced at the level of cars. The project highlights how sustainable design strategies can contribute to more accessible personal mobility solutions.
