andreas murkudis presents new show at its store 77 in berlin

Retail brand Andreas Murkudis presents a new exhibition at its Store 77 in Berlin, Germany, where the colorful worlds of Belgian duo Muller Van Severen and Belgian artist Willem Cole meet. Opening on November 11, 2023, and running until January 13, 2024, this vibrant showcase can be seen as an encounter, or even a dialogue, between chairs, lamps, tables, shelves, and rugs by Muller Van Severen and the concrete abstract drawings of Willem Cole, who will also unveil new mosaic rods for the first time. Both bodies of work will be shown together to celebrate the meeting of two Belgian visions. Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen are attending the opening event on November 11, 2023.

Muller Van Severen and willem cole join in dialogue

Next to their mutual love for color and research, Muller Van Severen (see more here) and Willem Cole (more here) are also constantly flirting with the boundary between art and design at the Andreas Murkudis store. Founded in 2011 by Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen, MVS’s designs appear to be created almost intuitively and with total effortlessness. Both designers have been on an inspired quest for sculpturally interesting furniture objects, always including the space around them, characterized by careful research into their shared passion for art, architecture, and materials; the resulting aesthetic gives the impression of objects drawn with crayons in space. Reflecting on this latest exhibition, the MVS duo writes: ‘We’re really excited for this new show at Andreas Murkudis. Andreas was one of the first ‘believers’ of our work, which created a deep bond. We had our first show in Berlin with him in 2014, and we did some great shows together ever since.’

In parallel, Willem Cole’s art, based on three primary colors with more or less white space in between, demonstrates how a manifold of varieties can emerge from a limited set of essential differences. Cole does portraits of friends and relatives based on a mixture of science and painting. The works are not pure paintings, nor can they be defined as sculptures or installations. He mixes genres and media while aiming for the purest and most highly refined result. He wants to distance himself as much as possible from virtuoso painting to emphasize the individuality of the medium, a two-dimensional reality, without lapsing into a naive, childish, or expressionist style. To do this, he draws both on the tradition of geometric abstraction and the sciences. By negating virtuosity and making abstract monochrome volumes, Cole blurs the lines between art and design while echoing true poetry and visual force.
