MULLET VOLLEYS

Mullet might have surfaced in another era as part of fashion and history before its stardom slowed down, but Volley, an Australian footwear brand, has picked it up again. Not as a hairstyle, but as an accessory to adorn its shoe design. ‘Did someone say it’s a mullet shoe?!,’ the brand writes. ‘No, this isn’t a prank, our MULLET VOLLEYS have landed.’ That’s right. The limited-edition shoes from the brand have a put-on, strip-off mullet at the back of the design, attached through a velcro strip. The glossy, flowy brown hair sways as the wearer walks around, a suitable complement to a mullet hairstyle.

A velcro hair piece

MULLEt VOLLEYS feature the brand’s original rubber sole, DAMPENERTECH 10 shock-absorbing footbed for all-day comfort, and a webbing detail on the collar. The removable velcro hair piece is from a synthetic material, and the shoe’s design is made 100% animal-free, as the brand claims. The brand chose dark green with a strip of yellow as the introduction of the mullet piece to its catered clients to further spotlight the design. MULLET VOLLEYS are part of Volley’s Heritage High collection, and while some might be taken aback by the style’s resurface in the form of a shoe accessory, the release comes with supporting a good cause.

Supporting a good cause

Volley has partnered with Black Dog Institute to support Mullets for Mental Health with 100% of the profits from the shoe to be donated to the charity. The institute is a free, online program that aims to improve the wellbeing and resilience of young Australians, putting forward science, compassion, and action as the cornerstones of its mission and vision. ‘As the only medical research institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan, our aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone. We do this through ‘translational’ research. Integrating our research studies, education programs, digital tools and apps, clinical services, and public resources to discover new solutions, foster connections, and create real-world change,’ the institute writes along with the information that one in five experiences symptoms of mental illness in any given year, and that in Australia, the number equates to around 5 million people. ‘And roughly 60% of these people won’t seek help.’
