from now through october 1, 2017, naoto fukasawa is presenting his first solo exhibition in japan. hosted at the panasonic shiodome museum in tokyo, ‘AMBIENT’ spotlights the multifaceted designer’s lifestyle items for some of the world’s most significant brands, including alessi, MUJI, and maruni. fukasawa’s wide ranging sphere of products ranges from precision instruments to home appliances and furniture, with every object embodying the philosophy ‘without thought’ — the idea that design should be influenced by the unconscious actions of people.

the title of the exhibition ‘AMBIENT’ is a reference to both environment and atmosphere. for fukasawa, an object is shaped by the content in which it is placed, in turn, implying that this is the form the environment requires. by simply using an object in its intended environment, a person transforms the ambience of that environment into what fukasawa calls ‘a positive atmosphere.’ the act of using a lamp, coffee maker, or bowl designed by fukasawa is, for example, the act of designing the ambience of one’s own environment.

through the creative presentation and spatial configuration of the museum displays, the exhibition seeks to reproduce the ‘positive atmosphere’ fukasawa has been known to achieve through design.
