the ‘indigo’ ensemble, designed by serge bensimon in collaboration with young designers

‘natural indigo,’ opening in january at the parisian gallery s. bensimon, is an exploration of a color that french fashion designer serge bensimon has long found fascinating. the furniture pieces ‘treat color as if it were a material,’ drawing contemporary design into dialogue with the storied history of the natural dye.

a derivative of tropical plants, indigo is a color of infinite variations. the techniques by which it is extracted, and the temperature and duration of its processing all affect its final color and tone.

historically, indigo has at times been so valuable that it earned the nickname, ‘blue gold.’ with their natural wooden surfaces and indigo-dyed tops, the exhibition works themselves recall this title, even as they also demonstrate the potential uses of this material.
