nendo: ghost stories

nendo ghost stories

the ‘cabbage chair’ was originally designed in response to fashion designer issey miyake’s exhibition themed around living in the 21st century. nendo focused on designing a chair ‘without making use of conventional chair-manufacturing assumptions’. instead they utilizes pleated paper rolls which are actually waste from miyake’s clothing pleating process. the chairs conceal their function, opening to reveal the seat. the chair aims to demonstrate the power of the ‘hand-made’ in this day of machine-assisted production.

nendo: ghost stories will run at the friedman benda gallery, new york from february 27 – march 28, 2009.
