nendo designs peelable package and label for shiawase bananas

nendo has designed a clever packaging graphic for the ‘shiawase banana’ for unifrutti japan. these high-quality fruits are grown in the north-central region of the island of mindanao in the philippines, on a plantation in a national park at altitudes of 1,000 meters or more.

the minimalistic design for unifrutti rejects unnecessary boxes and packing material, instead using stickers on the surface of the peel as the primary label information system.when we were asked to design the packaging, we didn’t want to just come up with something extravagant because of its high quality: that would be totally inappropriate for an environmentally friendly banana’, the studio relays. the sticker is double layered: the first layer reproduces the textural feel and color of the banana skin, with realistic bruises and discoloration illustrated on its surface; the second indicates a written message printed onto an image of banana flesh in the background.

in addition to the label, nendo has designed a paper bag for purchased bananas. the carrier is designed so that when the string handle is removed you can easily take the fruits out of the inner volume. when unfolded and laid flat, the bag reveals its large banana leaf shape, where a detailed description of the ‘shiawase banana’ is printed on the reverse side.

  • The idea is clever. But it creates waste, after peeling the top part of the label, you are stuck with a piece of useless paper that needs to be disposed…

  • Isn’t it biodegradeable?
