japanese studio nendo has designed ‘sundial’ for kartell. on preview at imm cologne 2011, the versatile unit re-interprets the form and function of a traditional bookshelf. encased in a glossy white or black frame, the movable opaline dividers look as if they are in constant evolution. set at various distances, the tilting and rotating shelves mimic the shadows cast by a sundial. when books are inserted into the compartments, the aesthetic and motion of the shelf evolve even further.

the dividers which segment four fixed horizontal shelves are available in clear, blue, green or brown and can be used in combination with either of the lacquered frames that measure 165 x 100 x 35cm.

  • Why no shots of books in the shelves so we can see ‘the aesthetic and motion of the shelves evolve even further”?

    D. Barber says:
  • I second D. Barber’s request! I was hoping to see the functionality of the piece as well. I love the aesthetics and can only imagine the beauty of it when naturally backlit! But would the same look transfer when used as a bookcase?
