the ‘tokyo tribal collection’ is comprised of simple chairs, shelves, stools and tables that have been conceived in compact sizes in order that they fit in well with the contemporary urban living space, and smaller confines. the japanese creative wanted to develop a family of objects that melded small homeware goods with furniture, contrasting more conventional concepts of interior design.

each piece sees various materials and functions converge into single entities. solid oak is used for the main frames of the furniture, while volcanic sand plaster is used for top board finishes. a combination of bamboo rattan elements are integrated into the collection, hand-woven by local artisans in the philippines. the natural material’s elastic properties makes it ideal for the back supports of the chair. additionally, baskets crafted from the fibres serve as decorative and functional details, in some cases legs from stools and chairs piercing through them in which they can be used for storing small objects.
