a screw with slots that disappear completely

US-based woodmaker and youtuber andrew klein has revealed his ‘next big thing’: a screw with invisible slots that disappear completely. instead of needing to be hidden like ordinary screws, this precision-crafted innovation can be integrated into any design as a decorative accent, as the holes are only visible when the screwdriver is introduced, completely disappearing once the tool is removed. created with the purpose of aesthetics in mind, these new screws are ideal for carpenters who want an extremely clean and seamless look on their finished pieces.

the endless possibilities of the invisible screw slots

in his latest video, andrew klein presents detailed close-ups of his new design, while sharing some craft examples that could be perfected with the use of this reinterpreted screw. ‘since it has no slot, you could recess it into a tabletop and it would just be an unbroken flush surface with a really cool decorative look,’ the youtuber explains. ‘you could design high-end flat-pack furniture because assembling with a screw that looks like a disc would be a pretty cool novelty,’ he adds. what’s more, the new screws can also be used to hold hidden drawers and compartments,

klein shares that this new project was inspired by wire cut EDM demonstration toys that show two pieces of metal sliding against each other and coming together so perfectly that the seam disappears. the designer took this popular, ‘satisfying’ concept and made it into something functional: a new screw that looks like a smooth disc, with no (visible) slots, as well as a screwdriver to complete the set. the newly introduced system uses stainless steel magnets, so that the driver is held in the screw without the little plunger pushing it out.
