in celebration of ettore sottsass‘ 100th birthday, spanish eyewear company nina mûr presents a new sunglasses collection in collaboration with abet laminati, influenced by the memphis group’s colors and styles founded in the early 1980s by the artist himself. throughout his lengthy career, sottsass worked closely with design company abet laminati, giving him the creative liberty to experiment with various mediums.

nina mûr‘s new eyewear collection with abet laminati, heavily influenced by the memphis group, are sunglasses that appear as little facial sculptures in which the laminated decoration plays a fundamental role similar to sottsass’ furniture design. coating the glasses is reflective of the innovative idea of making plastic-laminated furniture that caused a stir in the eighties.

the ‘nina mûr goes to memphis’ collection is composed of two lines: original memphis, characterized by small-scale laminated details in digital print, and basic memphis composed of cleaner and monochromatic models. the entire collection is made from birch leaves sourced from finland and cut using algorithmic technology which is then hand-painted and polished manually.
