in 2012, noé duchaufour lawrance designed the restaurant ciel de paris located in the french capital’s montparnasse district, an area which at one time was frequented by likes of great artists such as degas and manet. in his vision for the culinary venue, duchaufour lawrance wanted to transform the sky-high space into a comfortable and timeless venue, also transcribing these motions and details into the design of the furniture.

drawing from the formal and artistic elements he employed in the project, the french designer has  transposed the soothing and cozy atmosphere into an armchair for TABISSO. conceived for both private and professional, ‘ciel!’ has been realized as a modular seating object in order that it meets the various aesthetic and functional needs of its intended space.

at its core, ‘ciel!’ is characterized by a complex shell structure that has been formed using 3D wood molding. it is the first furniture project in france to use this technology, and comes in either a walnut or oak version, with upholstered seating. alternatively, there is the option of a smooth, glossy black or white ABS shell for a more contemporary look. the armchair is supported by five different braces in metal or wood, depending on how it is being used; in the contract or hospitality market, in a restaurant or home.

‘ciel!’ expresses the smooth shapes and taut lines that are a signature of noé duchaufour lawrance’s practice. ‘my point is that design is not just a response to a functional need, it also brings a poetic dimension‘, explains noé duchaufour lawrance. ‘I wanted this chair range to be narrative, in the sense that its elaborate line would speak out, and its elegance would evoke reassuring thoughts.’

noé duchaufour lawrance’s ‘ciel!’ armchair for TABISSO was presented at maison&objet 2015 in paris.
