2022 lineup announced for NOMAD st moritz

NOMAD returns to st moritz this march with a unique selection of collectible design and contemporary art. set within a 16th-century patrician house in switzerland‘s endagin valley, the 9th edition of the traveling art and design fair promises ‘exquisite exhibits’ presented by returning and new galleries from across the globe.

conceived by giorgio pace and nicolas bellavance-lecompte, NOMAD debuted in 2017 and the initiative has since completed eight editions in st. moritz, monaco, venice, and a virtual edition in cannes. bringing leading international galleries to extraordinary architectural locations, the nomadic showcase offers a more intimate experience than large-scale fairs. for the 2022 edition, carefully curated pieces will be exhibited against the refined historical interiors of chesa planta in samedan between march 1st – 6th.

as NOMAD media partner, we’re bringing you a look at some of the 33 galleries and unique special projects that will be presented, including ‘il lunario del sole’ by fornasetti and group exhibition ‘TRACES’ curated by theo niarchos. see the full list of exhibitors at the bottom of the page and stay tuned to designboom’s upcoming coverage of the six-day event.

IL LUNARIO DEL SOLE BY FORNASETTI

fornasetti brings the sun to NOMAD st moritz with a project titled ‘il lunario del sole’. the exhibition inside chesa planta presents a series of 12 tapestries hand-knotted in wool and silk named ‘twelve months and twelve suns’. the milan brand will also showcase an unpublished tapestry conceived by barnaba fornasetti and giovanni bonotto of a-collection. resulting from this collaboration, the 13th tapestry experiments with materials such as recycled plastic waste and organic yarns.

the name of the exhibition comes from an italian almanac called ‘lunario del sole’. first released in 1942, the publication featured original designs by piero fornasetti, which serve as inspiration for the 13 tapestries—one for each month plus one that represents the cover of the book. for NOMAD st moritz, fornasetti presents a contemporary re-edition of the almanac hand-printed by A14 and with hand-painted tables by barnaba fornasetti and valeria manzi.

TRACES CURATED BY THEO NIARCHOS

for the group exhibition at NOMAD st moritz, curator theo niarchos presents ‘TRACES’—an ode to chesa planta and its stunning alpine setting. the exhibition brings together works from artists represented by four prominent engadine galleries: vito schnabel gallery, galleria monica de cardenas, galerie karsten greve and galerie tschudi. curated by niarchos, the exhibition is dedicated to the history of chesa planta; the stunning samedan setting, the generations of families who inhabited it, and the decadent decor that has filled it.
