swedish note design studio have been commissioned by fine food, to develop their restaurant and coffee bistro in the hammarby sjöstad district of stockholm. like the photo series of death valley by jordan sullivan, the 200 sqm. space captures the subtle variation and soft color changes of daylight in the desert – turning a harsh landscape with a variant of rugged materials into an inviting eating environment. ‘one of the challenges designing the place is the fact it being a mix of a café, lunch restaurant and bistro,’ explain the studio. ‘it must work just as well serving breakfast at 7am in the morning as serving beer 7pm in the evening.’

the base of the interior is a custom made herringbone tile floor representing the rich gray scales of rocks and mountains. the color palette – ranging from the deep green marble to various nuances of pale green and turquoise with contrasting salmon red and peach – are a direct translation of the vibrant variations of the natural light in the mountains.

the materials are typical scandinavian such as light ash wood, brass and natural leather except for the green guatemala marble used some part of the design. a collection of tables, sofas and shelves were specifically designed by note for the eatery, giving the store its own unique identity. in addition to the custom furniture, the space incorporates ceramic lighting from note for ex-t, lacquered wooden chairs from zilio aldo, slick floor tiles from mutina and a selection of brass wall lights from atelier areti.
