the versatility of furniture for the changing work and domestic space has lead to the development of the ‘tool’ adjustable side table. born in 2011 between james irvine and OFFECCT, the aim was to create a surface in which people could be freed from their office desks, offering them the possibility to easily connect their work area to any type of furniture or person… no matter what the situation is.

in realizing the ‘tool’ adjustable side table, some of the original characteristic aspects were modified, but the overall design concept has remained intact — with user friendliness, and no visible mechanics being priorities. the finalized scheme sees the initial dimensions of ‘tool’ reduced, but the challenge of integrating a lever with a smooth vertical operation has worked out well, offering ease in modifying the height of the surface.

OFFECCT debuts the furniture piece on the occasion of the 2015 stockholm furniture fair from february 3-7, 2015.

I always knew when james had fallen asleep by the thud of the telephone landing on the floor. every night the same story. he would have liked an extendable bedside table on which to put his phone, glasses or book. when watching a film stretched out on the sofa, we never wanted to get up to eat. we would have liked two height adjustable table-trays for a plate and glass, a bottle of wine and the remote. when in our studio, we often need an extension for our conference table: a support top to put a cup of coffee on or do sketches, that would adapt to the height of one’s chair; and that’s how james came up with the idea of a table that would come to your aid at different moments of everyday life,’ explains marialaura rossiello irvine, studio irvine. ‘for me, this has been a very important project to complete and I think we have really come close to the original idea of the table,’ she adds.
