official oktoberfest 2013 poster and T shirt

munich-based communication student akim sämmer won this year’s design competition for the official oktoberfest 2013 poster.

every year the city helds a design contest and chooses the official oktoberfest motif. this motif then not only appears on the 10.000 print posters, but also on T-shirts, beer glass mugs, stone mugs, and other souvenirs. the first contest was held in 1952. since 1978 the wiesn-mug is the chief motif.
like we expected, the 2013 poster shows a completely redesigned mug and follows the flat design trend. opinions are mixed, but among the design community, some are outraged. others love it. but what do you think? let us know below in the comments section!

the munich oktoberfest, the largest folk festival in the world, has its origin in the wedding ceremonies of crown prince ludwig – later king ludwig I of bavaria – with princess therese of sachsen-hildburghausen in the year of 1810. in 2013, the oktoberfest will be celebrated for the 180th time. 24 oktoberfests had to be cancelled, among others in the years during and after the war and because of cholera epidemics in the years 1854 and 1873.

last year about 6,4 million guests visited the world’s largest popular festival. 7,4 million litres of beer were drunk. roughly 508.958 chicken, 115.015 pairs of pork sausages and 116 whole oxen and 85 calves roasted on spits were consumed, to mention only some figures.
THE OKTOBERFEST STARTS TOMORROW and ends on sunday, 6th october, at 11.30 pm.
