olafur eliasson to launch solar-powered little sun diamond lamp

olafur eliasson was one of the many creatives invited to give a talk during the 2017 edition of the design indaba conference held in cape town, south africa. the artist spoke about ‘little sun’, the project founded by him and engineer frederik ottesen where they continue to explore methods in bringing clean and affordable energy to the masses living in small, rural communities in africa which are not built on an electric grid.

after the success of ‘little sun’, a solar-powered lantern calibrated using high efficiency solar cells, olafur eliasson teased at design indaba the launch of a new device to add to his environmental project: the little sun diamond. it will be similar to its sunflower-shaped predecessor and will also feature a LED light with the capabilities of powering a smartphone after only five hours in the sun. the new diamond shaped, pocket-sized device will include the option of producing a dappled effect due to its faceted surface. in addition, it can be propped up to give a more direct and intense beam of light.
