Origami-inspired geometry lets Helix expand with growing plants

Designed by Scottish product design studio POTR, Helix is a modular self-watering growing system that adapts to different stages of plant growth through an expandable origami-inspired structure. Developed as an alternative to conventional plant pots, the design combines an adjustable container with an integrated watering system, allowing a single product to accommodate seed germination, propagation, mature houseplants, and climbing plants.

The defining feature of Helix is POTR’s patented origami-inspired geometry, influenced by deployable structures developed for the aerospace industry. As a plant’s root system expands, the pot can be twisted and extended to increase its internal volume, allowing additional compost to be added without removing the plant from its container. By eliminating conventional repotting, the system reduces root disturbance while extending the functional lifespan of the pot.

Recycled polypropylene and capillary irrigation define Helix pot

Helix incorporates a concealed water reservoir that supplies moisture to the soil through capillary action, enabling plants to regulate their water intake. The self-watering system is designed to provide hydration for up to two weeks between refills. Interchangeable accessories further expand the product’s functionality, supporting seed germination, plant propagation, herb cultivation, and climbing plants, while multiple units can be connected to create modular indoor growing arrangements.

Sustainability informed both the product’s material selection and manufacturing strategy. Helix is produced from recycled polypropylene and designed to ship flat-packed, reducing packaging requirements, transport volume, and storage space. Its expandable construction also minimizes the need to replace containers as plants grow, reducing material consumption and supporting long-term use.

Founded in Glasgow, POTR combines industrial design, engineering, and sustainable manufacturing in the development of everyday products. With Helix, the studio applies deployable structural principles to create an adaptable, growing system that integrates adjustable geometry, self-watering technology, and modular functionality within a single product.
