Mecano Mobile: a new aesthetic for modular kitchen designs

Celebrating the first ADN Forum anniversary event in Madrid, the team at Patricia Bustos Studio has created Mecano Mobile in collaboration with Kitchen furniture brand SixtyPro. Inspired by Italian architect Carlo Scarpa’s work, the yellow-coated space represents a new way of conceiving modular kitchens formed by a structure organized in the shape of a Meccano that perfectly meshes the storage volumes with the seating and bar areas. With the use of geometries and polygons, Patricia Bustos presents visually striking forms and more complex structures that explore new aesthetic possibilities in the world of kitchens.

patricia bustos & sixtypro evoke carlo scarpa’s works

The entrance to the Mecano Mobile space for the first ADN Forum event is a tribute to Carlo Scarpa with a 1970s-inspired facade of perforated polycarbonate in which light enters through organic shapes that contrast with the interior geometry. Patricia Bustos Studio (see more here), jointly with the team at SixtyPro, distributed the spatial layout into three areas: a central kitchen, a lateral office, as well as a water area and high worktop on the opposite side, creating a sequence of spaces and a careful manipulation of light that uplifts the whole. According to Bustos, the intention here is, ultimately, to recreate terraces and slopes to play with movement within an orthogonal box that, at first sight, seems much more rigid.

1970s mosaics meet polycarbonate, light, and lacquered wood

Elaborating on her design, Patricia Bustos highlights the play with contrast between the organic and the geometric, between the very small and the very large, and between the whole and the parts. She also handles the light to accentuate these contrasts, reflected in the selection and arrangement of materials, such as using geometric mosaics and tiles in specific patterns to create interesting visual effects. The degraded lacquered wood emerges from the walls as an extruded volume that decomposes the lines of the container, generating a harmonious piano or domino-like movement. The tile checkerboard with retro volumetry, contrasting with the polished Lacquer and the backlit etched glass, is tempered by a completely carpeted floor and a bench in animal print fabric. In short, Mecano Mobile symbolizes a play of materials that reflects delicate craftsmanship and careful consideration of the relationship between space, light, materials, and color.
