pearson lloyd’s intelligent waste system for joseph joseph addresses refuse + recycling problems in the home

with many households hosting multiple bins in order to deal with the waste and recycling produced by its inhabitants, an inevitable amount of floor space is lost; in addition to the increased amount of mess and extra effort required to sort and separate items. research has proven that when it comes to dealing with these issues, many households — regardless of size — still resort to carrier bags and boxes to split refuse and recycling. in response to this problem, kitchenware company joseph joseph worked together with pearson lloyd to deliver an intuitive and comprehensive approach to waste management that enables flexibility for organizing garbage and recycling.

‘stack’ slim line modular units can either be stacked neatly on top of each other, or placed side by side

the ‘intelligent waste™ system looks to make a difference, responding directly to an increasingly demanding consumer market. it is composed of three different products: ‘totem’ — the initial design; accompanied by ‘stack’ and ‘stack 4’. collectively, they offer a shift in functionality, and forecast how future designs in the market will be developed in response in a world that is becoming increasingly more conscious of the need to recycle.

‘stack’ offers access to all compartments, even when stacked

‘stack’ primarily focuses on waste, and provides an innovative approach to recycling in the home through a functional and space-saving solution. made from ABS plastic, the slim line modules can either be stacked neatly on top of each other, or placed side by side to maximize space and blend discretely into any kitchen. each unit is composed of a removable inner bucket for easy emptying, marked with colour-coded tabs to identify recycling types; and features a sliding lid to hide the mess within. a concealed handle makes the units easy to transport and reconfigure as necessary. the design offers access to all compartments, even when stacked, with inner buckets that fit both custom and standard bin liners. ‘stack’ also includes a ventilated food waste caddy, ‘stack 4’.

recycling waste falls into two categories: non-compostables and compostables, the later — primarily food — being one of the largest contributors to household waste. it is only recently that solutions of disposing of it properly have been developed. ‘stack 4’ has been conceived to better manage household compost. it can be used on its own, or integrated with other products from the ‘intelligent waste™’  collection. the caddy works to reduce moisture and odours that are a result of organic waste, through the implementation of a self-ventilating system. an outer shell promotes air flow through its main compartment, in which air can circulate freely, and prevents odours from building. an integrated filter works to absorb and minimise smell, enabling air to escape out of the caddy, releasing any potential moisture. the polypropylene body with stainless steel handle is dishwasher safe, making it hard-wearing and easy to clean. the ‘stack 4’ caddy has a liner-retaining hole that ensures bags stay in place, and the rim of the removable lid hides any untidy overhang. the portable unit is designed to live on a counter top, but also fits seamlessly onto the stack recycling bins.

‘totem’ occupies the same space as a regular kitchen bin, but has more functions without compromising capacity

‘totem’ works differently, and is a ground-up solution that occupies the same space as a conventional kitchen bin, offering more functions without compromising capacity. the steel body is split laterally, with the bins stacked above each other. this means that both the bottom and top units maintain easy to use, large openings to facilitate filling and handling. the lower unit is mobile and can be wheeled to wherever you are working. it can also be subdivided, offering greater separation possibilities. a specially designed food caddy can be stored either in the top or bottom section of the unit, or be removed and placed outside the bin on the worktop. details include a bag retainer that keeps liners in place outside the bin on the worktop. ‘totem’ can be arranged to separate four types of waste, while existing products typically manage just two. its lateral separation means that in its entirety, it has a greater capacity and functionality, without requiring any additional floorspace.

making home waste and recycling as efficient and intuitive as possible is the aim of the ‘intelligent waste™’. as the category grows, more products will be developed to change the way in which home waste is considered to better suit the needs of today’s users. waste is unavoidable in modern life and recycling is no longer an option, but an obligation. intelligent waste starts in the home.
