the fifth incarnation in the MAMA shelter series sees philippe starck once again design the scheme’s energetic and vibrant interiors. founded by starck and the trigano family in 2008, the shelters are based around creating a unique sense of hospitality and comfort. the goal of the shelters is to take in consideration the individual, rather than their social constraints. the schemes are intended to form sanctuaries from the outside world, establishing a relaxed atmosphere in which the guest is able to think clearly.

located at the heart of bordeaux’s historic center, the interiors engraved with philippe starck‘s design take the shape of an euphoric and welcoming bazaar – envisioned as a village square abuzz with activity. on the ground floor a range of atmospheres creates an ‘orchestrated madness’ which permeates throughout the shelter. the development comprises a spacious restaurant, a pizzeria, cocktail and wine bars as well as two workshops.

set over five floors, the 97 rooms feature the ultimate in comfort and connectivity with five-star bedding and cotton sheets. the choice of materials, colors and details play a part in ensuring an indulgent welcome. every room is equipped with an iMac providing internet, television, radio and computer services.

‘MAMA shelter is the freedom, the meeting, the intelligence, the construction, the sensuality … affordable for all, trans-social, trans-ethnic, trans-cultural MAMA draws a diagonal line through the fabric of bordeaux’, explained philippe starck.

the next MAMA shelter will open in los angeles at the end of 2014.
