looking for a means in which cyclists could better deal with the unpredictability and frequent precipitation in london, dan mcmahon and patrick laing created the plume mudguard. the design, which matches the timelessness, simplicity and reliable engineering of a bicycle, keeps water, chemicals and mud off a rider’s back, and is made from resistant materials that won’t crack or bend from outdoor temperatures.

a lot of functionality is packed into the compact recoiling ‘plume mudguard’. its rubber mount stretches to fit any standard seat post size, and requires no tools or extra screws for attachmenet. it’s also designed to absorb shock, so it won’t fold until you want it to. the sprung stainless steel shield has gone through exhaustive pseudoscientific testing to ensure it won’t bend out of shape. the spring is conceived to suspend over the rear wheel or recoil in seconds, and is resistant to rust and corrosion. the outer wing edge is made from flexible silicone rubber that protects riders from the sharp edges of the stainless steel. the plume logo also acts as a reflector for nighttime visibility. after a successful crowd-funding platform by the team at plume, the mudguard is now available for purchase; and is on show as part of the ‘cycle revolution’ exhibition at the design museum, london from november 18th, 2015 – june 30th, 2016.
