3D printed accessories with russian ‘panelki’ aesthetics

moscow-based sxema collective has collaborated with a local kintwear factory to reinterpret the post-soviet typical architecture into a unique 3D printed fashion accessory collection. drawing influence from the russian panelki vibe, the series provides an arrangements of knit accessories including scarves, hats, and balaclavas, while using the principles of generative design. the models are built in 3D and put into a jacquard machine. thus, we automate the production of clothing and the entire creative process.

Artificial intelligence as an unbiased designer

sxema’s project started out as an experiment investigating architectural neural network. the team trained styleganv2, used official NVIDIA tensorflow implementation, and wrote an interface to explore network capabilities. then the designers selected ten thousand images of post-soviet typical architecture, and the AI system constructed an average view of ‘panelki’.

then, sxema started to develop their ideas further, getting more and more inspired by generative design. ‘by adjusting the properties of the AI we found out that it can be an independent actor of the artistic process. the AI designer is not biased towards any cliché or opinions, it is able to create very unusual and unexpected combinations and ornaments and we started to apply it as placement and allover prints for 3D clothes,’ the team shares. ‘we feel that this approach to design is what the future will look like,’ they add.
